Mexico City to Open New Bike Lane

La Calzada de Tlalpan will host a bike ride to inaugurate the planned bike lane for the 2026 World Cup, so road closures are possible. Clara Brugada, Head of Government of Mexico City, announced that she expects thousands of people to attend the event, which will begin at the capital's Zócalo, and that there may be closures on Calzada de Tlalpan. When will the ride for the inauguration of the bike lane in Tlalpan take place? According to Clara Brugada, the inauguration event for the bike lane on Calzada de Tlalpan will be held on Sunday, April 19, at 8:00 AM. The ride will begin at the Zócalo, where a “monumental bicycle” will be painted on the esplanade, and participants will be asked to get on it with their own bicycles so that the image can be captured by a drone. Once that activity is over, around 8:30, the ride will begin from the Zócalo to Periférico Sur, before the San Fernando hospital zone. “This is a message that Mexico City is betting on active mobility, on sports, on this type of mobility that helps us transform our lives and the city; it is sustainable mobility,” explained Clara Brugada in the invitation. It is expected that once the event is over, the bike lane in Mexico City that will run from the Historic Center to the south will be available. The so-called Ciclovía de la Gran Tenochtitlán, for which sex workers have protested, is one of the mobility projects of the Government of Mexico City for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will have five matches at the 'Azteca' Banorte Stadium, including the opening match between the Mexico National Team and South Africa. The project will be inaugurated less than two months before the opening match on June 11, as one of the mobility alternatives for the expected thousands of people, and adds to other services such as a new trolleybus that connects the University Olympic Stadium with the Azteca. Clara Brugada also reported in recent days that she will seek to have remote work in workplaces, as well as for the SEP to suspend classes on match days in Mexico City.
